BURIED IN THE PEAT (2022)

Frederica Brahms is an artist who lost her husband to cancer two years ago. She knows she can't magically overcome her grief by moving. But she decides to relocate anyway, to the family home she inherited on the isle of Pendille in Saint-Joachim, a commune of eight islands in the center of the Brière marsh in France. She wants to make a new life for herself and to work on her genealogy too. There is a lot of her family history that consists of contradictory stories that she wants to clarify. While researching her house and her ancestors, she manages to clarify those stories and find the truth behind them. But while she now has answers to most of her questions, she has also uncovered a decades-old mystery surrounding one of her ancestors. It's a mystery that she desperately wants to solve. And almost everyone, including the chief of police, is happy to help her.

REVIEWS

This story takes place in a remote and unique corner of France. (I took a side trip into Google Earth exploring the region's many fascinating features.) The author nicely weaves the plot around the main character's efforts to start a new life after tragedy and to better understand her family's history in the area. In the process she solves a longstanding mystery, finds closure from her grief and discovers new love. That's a lot to accomplish but Steele's smooth writing style keeps the story flowing at a good pace while telling it in a way that made me feel like I was right there watching it all unfold. - Chris Martelli, University Place, WA

My favorite book of yours so far. I love the setting -- so interesting. Thanks for letting me be the first of many to read it!  B.J.W., Venice, California

I love France and I've traveled throughout the country, but this story takes places in a region I was not familiar with. In addition to being a cold case mystery, it was also a remarkably good tour of the Ile de Pendille, San-Joachim, and the Briere Marais. This is the third novel I've read by this author, and I recommend it to anyone who likes a good mystery. - Eileen McCarthy, Long Beach, California

I've been to France four times and I never heard of this area. Loved this cold case mystery and now I want to visit Pendille. Joe P., Chicago, Illinois

Short and sweet, like all your books. Great story. I have always enjoyed cold case mysteries and this one delivers. M. Coper, Sacramento, California

I'm ready to move to Saint-Joachim! This story takes place in a part of France that I'd never heard of. The author brings this fascinating location to life while she unravels an intriguing cold case mystery. - Kathy Stoddard, Long Island, New York
